The history of the newspaper can be traced back to when Arthur W. “Nick” Arundel established the Times Community Newspapers. Back in 1963, Arundel, who happened to be the son of Russell Arundel, a notable figure in Pepsi-Cola bottling, acquired the long-standing Loudoun Times-Mirror, which had been in operation for 165 years and was centered in Loudoun County, Virginia. With enthusiasm, Arundel expanded his newspaper venture, acquiring papers in various locations across Virginia such as Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Herndon, McLean, Reston, Springfield, and Vienna.
The year 2008 witnessed a significant development when Times Community Newspapers merged its local newspapers in Centreville, Fairfax City, Fairfax Station, Herndon, McLean, Reston, and Vienna into a single publication. This new combined publication came to be known as the Fairfax County Times.
In 2009, there were speculations that the Loudoun Times-Mirror might merge with the Fairfax County Times. During this time, the Loudoun Times-Mirror reduced its workforce and joined forces with the Fairfax County Times to streamline operations. However, no actual merger took place.
Then, on May 26, 2009, Times Community Newspapers made a sale, transferring ownership of the Fairfax County Times to The Gazette, a newspaper group headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Notably, The Gazette group is a part of Post-Newsweek Media, a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. By February 2012, the Fairfax Times was operating under the umbrella of the Post-Newsweek Media division.
In November 2012, the Fairfax Times welcomed a new co-tenant as D.C. television station WRC-TV established its Northern Virginia bureau within the newspaper’s offices.
Moving ahead to August 2013, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com, acquired The Washington Post Company’s newspaper business for $250 million. This acquisition included The Washington Post, the Post Express daily free newspaper, El Tiempo Latino (a Spanish language newspaper), The Gazette weeklies, a printing plant located in Springfield, Virginia, and a parcel of land in Charles County, Maryland. Following this transaction, Nash Holdings LLC, a company owned by Bezos, officially became the owner of the Fairfax Times on September 30, 2013, when the sale was finalized.
The story continued in June 2015 when Nash Holdings made the decision to sell the Fairfax Times to Whip It Media. This locally owned company was founded by Richard Whippen, who previously served as the newspaper’s general manager.
